Learning to Mat
I bought my own mat boards and a mat cutter so I could display more of my artwork in my craft studio without needing a separate frame for every painting.
My plan is to cut most of the mats in standard sizes so I can swap paintings in and out whenever I feel like changing things around. I love that idea, although choosing the right mat color may be harder than cutting them!
Some colors completely change the mood of a painting. I’m not sure I like one mat better than another yet, or which colors belong with which paintings, but I’m having fun experimenting.
The bunny is definitely getting the pink mat. That decision is settled. 🐇💗
I also really like the double mat around my atmospheric winter painting. The deep blue and soft lavender pull out the shadows and snowy colors beautifully and make it feel much more finished.
Soon my craft studio walls may become their own little rotating watercolor gallery.
