Merry mayhem 2025 complete

The Merry Mayhem Mystery of 2025 is complete! While I didn’t finish it in a single day, by the next day, it was a flimsy, all ready to be quilted.

When I’ll actually get around to quilting it, I’m not sure. I’m thinking of buying some fluffy fleece for the backing since it’s a Christmas quilt—it’ll make it extra soft and cuddly.

The quilt top is twin-sized, made with fun fabrics I found at Joann’s for 60% off this time. I didn’t want to dip into my good stash for this project.

With some mystery quilts I’ve done with other groups, I wasn’t always happy with the final outcome or how the fabric pieces came together. That’s the nature of a mystery quilt: you don’t know what you’re getting, and that can be a little scary. When I buy fabric, I usually have a plan and already love it. This time, though, I think the fabric worked out beautifully!

I spent about $30, maybe $35, on the fabric. I still need to buy batting and backing, which I estimate will cost another $50. All in all, not bad for a twin-sized quilt! That said, I think I spent more time with my trusty friend, Jack the Ripper, during these two days than I did all of last year.

One thing I wish I’d done differently was waiting to cut the fabric until after the clues were released. If I had, I could have saved hours by using my AccuQuilt cutting system instead. Lesson learned! Still, I adore the pinwheels in the center blocks—they remind me of mint Christmas candies!

Finishing a quilt top at the start of the new year feels so satisfying. Now, it’s time to tackle my UFO list for 2025. (UFO = Unfinished Objects.) I still have a few lingering projects from years past that need attention. Back in 2022, I wrapped up so many. But with last year’s move, I’ve got quite a bit to catch up on again this year.
